WHO ARE THE EXPERTS?

Why do we do this? Aren't there enough goalie experts out there? Well....no. The Central Scouting Bureau for the NHL has a Goalie Checklist. Right there on the front page it asks if the goalie "consistently squares to the puck carrier." Really? How about squaring to the puck? This is just one example of what is wrong with the way we train, develop, and evaluate goalies. If its wrong here, then where else? Check out our Final Five rankings using the tabs below. And email us here if you are interested in learning more about a particular goaltender 1

Goalie signs with Saints

Kyle MacDonald has signed to play next season with St. Lawrence. MacDonald was one of our top picks last year as a rookie in the league despite sharing time with Blake Dougherty (Bentley). MacDonald was a Super 8 perennial at Xaverian and it isn't just a coincidence that the team has struggled since he left. He has been out all year with an injury but most schools have been looking at him for some time now and were already aware of his abilities. We know for a fact that there were Hockey East schools interested in MacDonald going back to his high school days. Here is the press release. There is also video of Kyle on our EJHL page

Pre-Season Top Five

We have posted our Pre-Season Top Five for the EJ and Empire divisions. We have had at least one viewing of all the goaltenders listed. The rankings our based on our viewings, stats, and a little bit of history (a goalie's track record matters in Pre-Season voting).

Interesting to note that our Final Five from last year's EJ, Empire, and Prep rankings have all moved up significantly this year (many earning D1 scholarships). Visit the pages for our rankings.

Colby Drost goes to Niagara

Drost was a goalie we watched at last year's Summer Showcase ('10) and garnered some attention around the time of the NHL Draft (his name wasn't called). Now he has committed to Niagara for this season and by our estimation projects as a solid D1 goalie. He will battle with sophomore Cody Campbell for playing time.

Pomfret goalie heading to Providence

We didn't have him on our radar last season, but most likely because Pomfret struggled, but Nick Ellis caught the eye of recruiters this summer.

The 6’1”, 165 lb. goalie has committed to Providence College for the fall of ’13.

A junior-to-be at Pomfret, Ellis is a 1/18/94 birthdate from Millersville, MD. He played in the Team Maryland organization before coming to Pomfret last fall.

Former Yale assistant Bruce Wolanin, his coach at Pomfret, describes Ellis as “a lanky, extremely athletic goalie who gets across the crease extremely well.”

“He’s also focused as all get-out. He gets to the rink early, and he stays late. Plus he’s a student of goaltending -- a cheerful, humble kid who is able to put goals-against behind him.”

The EJ Summer Showcase

The EJ Showcase is not the place to go and scout goalies for the upcoming season. As you may know, a lot of the EJ and Empire teams use this opportunity to watch younger kids who might be coming into the program and in some cases, they are just rounding out teams with whoever they can find. In several cases, the Empire teams were laying in the A Division while the B Division was made up of CHA and even Bantam Major players. Many of the rosters that were handed out were incorrect, making it difficult to scout new talent. We spent the Friday at the rink and then put the video camera away. However, we did manage to get Chase Gaudet of Andrews Hockey. We like his size, style, and how engaged he is in the process. He is a 94.
