WHO ARE THE EXPERTS?

Why do we do this? Aren't there enough goalie experts out there? Well....no. The Central Scouting Bureau for the NHL has a Goalie Checklist. Right there on the front page it asks if the goalie "consistently squares to the puck carrier." Really? How about squaring to the puck? This is just one example of what is wrong with the way we train, develop, and evaluate goalies. If its wrong here, then where else? Check out our Final Five rankings using the tabs below. 2011-2012 Pre-Season Top Five

1. Matt Braun - New Jersey Hitmen - He is a '92 birthdate and looks like a man playing against boys. Made 40 + saves against Pics in the BJB Shootout and made all of them look easy in a 5-4 OT win. Played in only 2 games to date so not sure of his status with the team

2. Matt Penta - Boston Jr Bruins - one of our Final Five from last season along with playing partner Brendan Leahy. It was Leahy that moved up to Junior A

3. Brain Tomzcyk - NEH - Hudson High goalie that led his team to last year's D3 state title now making the move to juniors

4. Brian Jacobs - SSK - The '93 from West Chester PA has already earned Player of the Week honors

5. Drew Michals - Boston Junior Bruins - the '95 goalie from BB&N was an invite to the Warren Strelow National Goaltending Camp.

Video pending on our Pre-Season Top Five. Last year's Final Five have made significant moves with Leahy, Jones, and Staversky all moving on to Junior A.

2010-2011 Final Five

1. Brian Walters - New York Apple Core

Went undefeated during the regular season (minus 2 OT losses) and posted a 1.85 GAA in a league not known for defense. Also posted a .927 Save Percentage and carried his team to the league title giving up just a single goal in the final game.

2. Brendan Leahy / Matt Penta - Boston Jr Bruins -

These two have shared the net all year and both responded well. We watched Leahy against the Philadelphia Revolution and he looked big and poised in the net. Leahy had 16 wins and a 1.66 GAA while Penta backed that up with 15 wins and a 1.83 GAA. Leahy got the start against Long Island and made 34 saves in the National semi-final game. Both should get a good luck at the EJ level next year.

3. Kollyn Jones - Syracuse Stars-

Top Ten in GAA, Save Percentage, and Wins (17). The '93 is listed as 5' 9" which may prevent him from getting some looks.

4. Mike DeLavergne - Brewster Bulldogs -

We saw DeLavergne play against the Springfield Pics and kept the game tied at several points while facing a barrage. He did end up going down in a shootout but played well. He has good athleticism and balance and squares to the puck. He needs size and strength to move to the next level.

5. Michael Staversky - Syracuse Stars

We saw him play in the EJ Summer tournament. Over skates the position a bit but we like his aggressive style.
