WHO ARE THE EXPERTS?
Why do we do this? Aren't there enough goalie experts out there? Well....no. The Central Scouting Bureau for the NHL has a Goalie Checklist. Right there on the front page it asks if the goalie "consistently squares to the puck carrier." Really? How about squaring to the puck? This is just one example of what is wrong with the way we train, develop, and evaluate goalies. If its wrong here, then where else? Check out our Final Five rankings using the tabs below. The Failure of NHL Playoff Goalies
Ken Campbell writes a great story about the disastrous goaltending display in this year's NHL playoffs. (Read story here)It goes back to, and presents further evidence for re-tooling the way we evaluate goaltenders. The process has to go beyond catch phrases like "big, athletic, sees the puck well, doesn't get rattled," etc. How about a real hard look at how a goalie plays in specific games against dynamic talent in pressure situations over a long period of time! Then you'd have great playoff goalies.
